What is an MEA Apostille? What are the uses of an MEA Apostille?

Apostille is the process of authenticating documents so that they are accepted in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is the authority in India responsible for attesting and apostilling documents for use abroad.

The MEA Apostille is recognized by all Hague Convention member countries and is essential for:

  • Visa processing

  • Employment abroad

  • Family visas

  • Higher education applications

Documents eligible for MEA Apostille include:

  • Personal papers: Birth certificate, death certificate, marriage certificate, power of attorney, etc.

  • Educational documents: SSLC, HSC, degree certificates, and diplomas.

Requirements:

  • Original documents only (photocopies are not accepted).

  • A valid passport copy must be submitted alongside the original documents.

  • The MEA affixes a unique Apostille Sticker on the reverse side of the document, verifying authenticity.

Why MEA Apostille Is Important

The Hague Convention of 1961 allows documents apostilled in one member country to be accepted by all other member nations, eliminating the need for repeated legalization.

From March 1, 2012, the MEA outsourced Apostille/Attestation services to authorized agencies. Only original documents can be apostilled; MEA does not accept photocopies or rely on unauthorized individuals.

NRIWAY is one of the Ministry of External Affairs’ outsourced partners, authorized to collect documents for MEA Apostille/Attestation, process them, and deliver the attested documents to individuals. This ensures NRIs and individuals abroad have a reliable, fast, and secure service.

MEA Apostille Process – Step by Step

Step 1: State-Level Authentication
Before MEA Apostille, documents must be authenticated by the relevant State Government authority:

  • Educational documents: Attested by the Education Department/HRD of the issuing State/UT. Must include the officer’s name, designation, and department seal.

  • Non-educational documents: Attested by the Home Department or General Administration Department (GAD) of the issuing State/UT.

Step 2: Commercial Document Authentication

  • Commercial papers must be pre-attested by the respective Chamber of Commerce.

  • The stamp must include the name and designation of the authorized signatory.

Step 3: MEA Apostille

  • After state-level authentication, the MEA legalizes the documents.

  • A unique Apostille Sticker with the Ministry’s seal and signature is affixed on the back of the original documents, completing the process.
