US to propose hike in h1 b application fee

On Thursday, U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta announced a rise in H1B visa application fees. The H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa for skilled professionals seeking employment in the United States. Thousands of foreign workers, including Indians, come to the U.S. under this visa to work in specialized fields such as IT, healthcare, and engineering.

Why the U.S. Government Increased the H1B Visa Fee

Each year, thousands of H1B visa applications are submitted, but a significant number are rejected. The Trump administration highlighted the need to:

  • Enhance training programs for U.S. workers in technology, healthcare, and manufacturing.

  • Prioritize American talent by reducing dependency on foreign workers from countries such as India and China.

  • Encourage multinational companies (MNCs) like Wipro, TCS, and Infosys to invest in STEM programs and hire U.S.-based talent.

The H1B visa fee hike is intended to fund apprenticeship programs and ensure that local U.S. workers gain advanced technical training.

Impact of the H1B Fee Increase

The rise in visa fees is expected to:

  • Reduce H1B applications from foreign professionals, especially from India, China, Germany, and France.

  • Push Indian IT companies to hire local talent in the U.S. instead of relying solely on offshore employees.

  • Affect MNCs by lowering technology utilization and productivity if overseas hiring is restricted.

Labor Secretary Acosta noted that $150 from the increased fee will directly fund apprenticeship programs, training U.S. workers in IT, healthcare, and manufacturing.
