How can an NRI get his birth certificate in India?

A birth certificate is one of the most important identity proofs in India. It is required for passports, visas, school admissions, and other official purposes. However, many people—especially those born before 1969—may not have a registered birth certificate. In such cases, you can apply for a Non-Availability of Birth Certificate (NABC).

Who Can Apply

If you were born before 1969 or your birth record is missing, you can request an NABC from the Municipal Corporation or Indian Consulate (for NRIs).

Documents Required

Provide valid ID and address proof such as:

  • Passport or PAN card

  • Aadhaar or Voter ID

  • Ration card (if available)

Application Process

  1. Visit or contact your local Municipal Corporation office.

  2. Submit a written request to the Registrar or Health Officer.

  3. Officials will verify if your birth record exists.

  4. If not found, fill out the NABC application form and attach documents.

  5. After verification, the Registrar issues the NABC confirming no birth record is available.
